This is safeguarded by the combination of highly proficient personnel, innovative machines, and ERP solutions. The choice of material is also important. There are a number of EU directives and regulations concerning materials.
Declaration RoHS
EU regulation for restriction of hazardous substances RoHS3 (EU) No 2011/65/EU and 2015/863/EU
The Restriction of use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) is a European directive which restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The substances in the directive may only be used in electrical and electronic equipment if used below the maximum concentration value by weight in homogeneous materials as listed below:
- Lead (0,1 %)
- Mercury (0,1 %)
- Cadmium (0,01 %)
- Hexavalent chromium (0,1 %)
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) (0,1 %)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (0,1 %)
- Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) (0,1 %)
- Butylbenzylphthalate (BBP) (0,1 %)
- Dibutylphthalate (DBP) (0,1 %)
- Di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (0,1 %)
BKL only processes semi-finished goods which our suppliers have declared to be in compliance with RoHS guidelines, insofar as they are able to verify.
Declaration of Effort REACH and Conflict Minerals
EU regulation for chemical elements REACH (EC) No 1907/2006
REACH is the European chemical regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals.
Under REACH, BKL is classified as a downstream user, as it neither makes chemical materials or substances, nor imports them into the EU. As a result, the REACH’s obligation to register does not directly apply to BKL, a tool manufacturer. Nevertheless, we have informed our suppliers about REACH and have asked them to fulfil their obligations, including the registration obligation, arising from the regulation.
EU regulation for conflict minerals CM (EC) No 2017/821
The Conflict Minerals (CM) Regulation imposes supply chain due diligence obligations on EU importers of certain minerals or metals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas, which aims to stop the financing of armed groups in developing countries.
The Regulation applies in particular to EU importers of minerals or metals containing tin, tantalum, tungsten or gold (so-called 3TG), if the annual volume imported per mineral or metal concerned exceeds the volume thresholds set by the Regulation. As such, the Regulation is not directly applicable to BKL. Nevertheless, BKL endorses the objectives of the European Union underlying the Regulation and we have informed all our suppliers about CM and asked them to comply with all their obligations arising from the Regulation and to provide a written statement of this upon first request to deliver.
